  form to request assistance.\nAbout our speaker:\n\n\n\nDr. J. Michael (M
 ike) Miller retired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (C
 DC) in 2011 after 38 years of government service.  He was the Associate D
 irector for Science of the National Center for Zoonotic\, Vector-borne\, a
 nd Enteric Diseases.  Dr. Miller did his undergraduate work at Northweste
 rn State University in Louisiana and completed his Graduate work in 1976 a
 t the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio after three
  years in the Army during the Vietnam war.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAt the CDC\, Dr. 
 Miller completed ASM’s Postdoctoral Residency in Medical and Public Heal
 th Microbiology and subsequently spent 12 years in the Division of Trainin
 g\, traveling and teaching diagnostic microbiology around the world. Then 
 for 12 years he directed the reference laboratories for the staphylococci\
 , most of the Enterobacteriaceae\, and the anaerobes in addition to direct
 ing laboratories in molecular epidemiology\, disinfection and sterilizatio
 n\, dialysis related diseases\, biofilms in medicine and public health\, a
 ntimicrobial testing and resistance mechanisms\, and environmental microbi
 ology.  For five years he oversaw the operations of the National Laborato
 ry Response Network (LRN) for bioterrorism and the Rapid Response and Adva
 nced Technology laboratory that develops and deploys rapid molecular tests
  for select agent detection.   He has served on the editorial board of C
 linical Microbiology Reviews and the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and 
 is an invited reviewer for several other journals.   He has served as th
 e CDC corporate delegate to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (f
 ormerly NCCLS)  and a former member of the Area Committee for Microbiolog
 y.  He has served as Chair of Division C (Clinical Microbiology) of the A
 merican Society for Microbiology and as the Divisional Group I Representat
 ive that oversees 5 Divisions within ASM. In 2003 he was awarded the covet
 ed bioMerieux-Sonnenwirth Award for leadership in clinical\, ASM’s highe
 st award for a clinical microbiologist and served two terms as the Dean of
  the American College of Microbiology\, the certification and accrediting 
 arm of the American Academy of Microbiology of ASM.  He is a former membe
 r of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Microbiology.  He 
 is the recipient of the 2009 ASM Founders Distinguished Service Award\, th
 e 2010 recipient of the National Gen-Probe Joseph Public Health Award\, an
 d the 2012 Illinois Society for Microbiology Pasteur Award.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n
 Dr. Miller is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology\, 
 a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology\, and holds a Clinical La
 boratory Director License in Georgia and Microbiology Laboratory Director 
 License in New York and New Jersey.   His area of expertise is in labora
 tory diagnosis of infectious diseases and in microbiology quality assuranc
 e and specimen management.  He is an internationally known speaker on top
 ics in Clinical Microbiology and clinically relevant specimen management.
   Dr. Miller is the author of two books\, the editor of two\, has contrib
 uted chapters in ten published texts\, and has over 100 journal articles i
 n peer-reviewed publications.  In addition\, he has authored 10 CDC publi
 cations and videotapes that are used worldwide as laboratory standards in 
 microbiology.
