What in this picture of a teenager’s room is connected to drugs? The end of March, we had the presentation on “Hidden in Plain Sight” by Marla Pollen the district intervention specialist for the Arlington Independent School District. She assisted us in strengthening our detective skills as a parent, grandparent, or family member on current teenager drug and alcohol trends, concealments, and how a concerned adult can help a young person making drug-using choices. This led to our pushing out information regarding the DEA’s Take Back Program on April 24th. We challenged our members to take pictures of themselves at locations they took their expired medications. One of our retired members (Class 2015), took back in Sun City, Texas which is about 170 miles south of our Dallas area while another member (Class 2019) took back in Grapevine, Texas. Also, the end of March, the chapter held its first scholarship fundraiser as a shooting event located at the Eagle Gun Range in Farmers Branch that was a wonderful success. There were 36 members who showed up for a great evening of shooting various firearms, including an AR full automatic. Due to their support, monies were raised for at least two $1,000 scholarships for college.
The chapter was asked to participate in a free Hoops It Up Community Resource Fair where the FBI’s Sextortion, Safe Online Surfing, Chasing the Dragon, and Child ID App was promoted. As a result, the chapter has been asked to present programs on these as well as participate in a National Night Out KickOff in June. Shout out to the members of Class 2019 for being volunteers all day, engaging with the children, and educating the public.
